L ’ turbinate hypertrophy and turbinoplasty

turbinoplasty

The turbinates are bone covered with mucous membrane that define the lateral wall of the nasal cavity. In each nasal passage there are 3 the turbinates are always present (bottom, medium, top) and one accessory (Supreme).

The turbinates are able to increase or decrease their thickness checking blood flow of the submucosa: they can adjust the air flow ’. The inferior turbinates are mainly responsible for this phenomenon since the passage of the higher air ’ in the lower part of the nasal cavity.
Lying down on blood flow to the nose causing a worst nasal breathing.
In pathological conditions the thickness of these mucous membranes can be constantly increased by blocking the passage of air ’: is referred to as turbinate hypertrophy.
Pharmacological and surgical solutions exist to combat such problems:
vasoconstrictor spray: quickly reduce the thickness of the mucous membranes of the turbinates for few hours, MUST NOT BE USED FOR MORE’ By 4-5 DAYS, addictive after relatively short periods and prolonged use reduces the ability of the mucous membranes of respiratory obstruction ’ perceive airflow accentuating l.
steroid medication spray: are safe medications have very low systemic absorption and can be used for extended periods of time. Their effect is after 10-15 day treatment.
turbinoplasty: is a simple non-invasive intervention and commonly performed under local anesthesia, which surgically reduces the thickness of the mucous membranes of the turbinates of less, improving the passage of air ’. Is short-lived, almost painless and requires a short remark after the procedure before being discharged.
In 10-15 days after ’ surgery breathing gets worse for the scabbing and mucus. When healing is complete you get to benefit from the results that are generally not permanent though (by the time the mucosa can again you become cardiomyopathy). L ’ intervention is repeatable.
L ’ extent of improvement is extremely subjective, are both poor results that exceptional.
May be brought also in individuals who have a nasal septum deviation which does not want to/can make a ’ general anesthesia, as an attempt to improve nasal breathing.
